The bodies of two illegal miners were brought to the surface late Tuesday night after they died underground at a disused mine in Langlaagte, south of Johannesburg.
Their bodies were recovered by a group of volunteers after government called off their rescue operations.
The operation was called off by government as they claimed there were no more trapped miners underground.
Chairperson of the Zimbabwean community in South Africa, Ngqabutho Mabhena says, “Monday night government called off the rescue operation, saying there were no more bodies or people inside the mine. But when we got there at around 11am we had to consult with the families and people that normally work in that mine. They did confirm to us that there were bodies still trapped inside.”
He says volunteers then took it upon themselves to conduct a search. “About 22 people in total went down and retrieved the bodies. The bodies were brought to the surface at 9:45 in the evening,” says Mabhena.
